Country music legend Johnny Lee brings his Top Ten hits to Cherokee Casino
SALLISAW, Okla. – The chart-topping, all-time country music favorite Johnny Lee, also known as the “original urban cowboy,” is coming to Cherokee Casino Sallisaw to perform a free concert Feb. 18.
This Texas native rose to superstardom during the early ‘80s with his appearance in the 1980 hit movie “Urban Cowboy” and several chart-topping hits that followed, including the No. 1 country song of 1980, “Lookin’ for Love,” which Lee performed in the movie.
Lee will be performing at 8 p.m. at the Back 40 Bar & Grill inside Cherokee Casino Sallisaw. Admission is free.
“If you like country music, this is a ‘can’t miss’ concert. Lee has so many great songs that are sure to get everyone out on the dance floor,” said David Stewart, CEO of Cherokee Nation Entertainment, which operates Cherokee Casinos and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.
Lee began his music career in high school with his own rock ‘n’ roll band, Johnny Lee and the Roadrunners. After graduation, Lee became a U.S. navy man and served a tour of duty on the USS Chicago.
Once discharged, Lee returned to music, playing in Texas nightclubs and bars including Mickey Gilley’s Club in Pasadena, Texas. It was in Gilley’s Club that Lee caught his big break when the club and Lee’s performances were featured in the movie “Urban Cowboy.”
Lee continued to top the country music charts with the No. 1 hits “One in a Million,” “Bet Your Heart on Me,” “The Yellow Rose” and “You Could Have Heard a Heartbreak.” His other chart-topping hits include “Cherokee Fiddle,” “Pickin' Up Strangers,” “Prisoner of Hope,” “Sounds Like Love,” “Hey Bartender,” “Rollin' Lonely” and “Save the Last Chance.”
Lee has three children, two grandchildren and one great grandchild. His daughter, Cherish, was born to actress Charlene Tilton in 1982. Tilton is famous for playing the role of Lucy Ewing in the popular television series “Dallas.”
Lee now lives in Branson, but prefers to continue taking his music on the road. Lee will also be performing at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs on Feb. 19.
