Acted
A player is considered to have acted if he checks, passes, calls or raises, provided this action is done in turn.
All-In
Having all of one's money in the pot.
Ante
A proportionally small wager required from each player before any cards are dealt.
Bet
To initiate a wager by putting chips in the pot.
Bet The Pot
To bet as many chips as there are in the pot.
Blind
A required bet made before any cards are dealt.
Bluff
A bet or raise with a hand you do not think is the best hand.
Board
The cards that are face up in the player's hand. In Hold 'em and Omaha, it's the community cards.
Boxed Card
A card treated as non-existent that appears face up in the deck.
Bring It In
To start the betting on the first round.
Button
A disc that rotates around the table to represent the dealer for the purposes of indicating which player is to be last to act. The player immediately to the left of the button acts first.
Burn A Card
A standard procedure in which the dealer removes the next card from the deck by placing it face down under a chip. One card is burned between each betting round.
Buy-In
The designated amount of chips or money required to enter a poker game.
Call
To put in the pot an amount of money equal to an opponent's bet or raise.
Check Raise
To check and then raise after an opponent bets.
Dead Hand
A hand that is not legally playable and cannot win the pot.
Door Card
In stud games, the first exposed card in a player's hand.
Eight or Better To Qualify
A form of high-low split in which the low hand must have an eight low card or smaller in order to qualify for the low hand; otherwise the high hand wins the entire pot.
Flop - In Hold 'em or Omaha, the first three exposed community cards, which are dealt simultaneously.
Flush
Five cards of the same suit.
Fold
To give up your hand and any claim to the pot.
Forced Bet
A required bet to start the action on the first round of a poker hand in Seven-Card Stud. For example, usually the lowest card on board must make a forced bet.
Gut Shot
A draw to an inside straight. Also called a belly buster.
Head Up
Playing against a single opponent.
High-Low Split (also High-Lo Split)
A poker game in which the highest and lowest ranking hands split the pot.
Inside Straight
A straight, which can only be made with a card of one rank that's usually somewhere in the middle of the straight.
Kicker
An unpaired card in a poker hand.
Limit
The amount a player may bet or raise on any round of betting.
Limit Poker
A poker game where the minimum and maximum amounts a player may bet or raise on any given round of betting are fixed.
Move All-In
To bet all the money one has on the table.
No-Limit Poke
Poker in which players may wager any amount they have in front of them at any given round.
Nuts
The best possible hand at any given point in a pot.
Off-Suit
Cards of a different suit.
Open
To make the first bet in a poker hand.
One Pair
An exposed pair.
Overcall
A call of a bet after another player has already called.
Overcard
In Stud games, a card higher than any card your opponent has showing.
Pair
Two cards of the same rank.
Pass
To check and also to fold.
Position
The spot in the sequence of betting in which a player is located. A player in first position would be the first person to act; a player in last position would be the last person to act.
Pot-Limit Poker
Poker in which the player may bet or raise any amount up to the current size of the pot.
Rake
A nominal charge that the dealer extracts for the house from each pot for the privilege of playing.
Represent A Hand
To make your opponents believe you have a bigger hand than you are showing on board. Thus, if in Seven-Card Stud you raise with an ace showing, you are representing a pair of aces. You may or may not in fact have a pair of aces.
Re-Raise
To raise after an opponent has raised.
Rolled Up
In Seven-Card Stud, three-of-a-kind on the first three cards.
Royal Flush
An ace-high straight flush.
Set
Three-of-a-kind.
Side Pot
A pot separate from the main pot, formed by continued betting after a player has put all his chips into the main pot.
Straight
Five cards in sequence.
String Bet
An illegal raise made in two distinct motions.
Suit
The ranking of poker hands is not affected by suit. Although in determining the forced bet requirements, suits are used as a "tie breaker." Suit rankings, for this purpose, are from highest to lowest - spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs.
Suited
Two or more cards of the same suit.
Trips
Three-of-a-kind.
Up Card
A card that is dealt face up.
Wired Pair
A pair in the hole.
